--A brief history--

Rockville Presbyterian Church, erected in 1850, was built on part of the Rockland Plantation owned by Dr. Daniel Jenkins Townsend. Dr. Townsend lived at Fenwick Hall on Johns Island in the winter and summered in the village of Rockville. Although he was a member and elder of the Johns Island and Wadmalaw Church, he found it difficult to attend when he was away for the summer, so he selected a spot in the village of Rockville and built a church with the help of two of his slaves who were highly skilled apprenticed carpenters in Charleston.

This small white church was built about 11 feet off the ground in the style of the homes of Rockville, with pillars made of tabby, a mixture of shell and lime.  Originally there was a tall steeple, but it crashed to the ground in the great hurricane of 1893. During the Civil War the steeple was used as a lookout from which to observe Federal gunboats in the North Edisto River.

In 1909 Rockville Presbyterian Church was formally made a separate entity from Johns Island and Wadmalaw Church by the Reverend Paul S. McChesney.

For many years Rockville church has been served by part time and interim ministers.  However in the early 1990's the church experienced a revival of growth and life and called its first full time pastor in 1995.  Additionally, in 1999 the congregation constructed a new building consisting of a modern kitchen, fellowship hall, office and classroom space.  The new building's lowcountry design greatly complements the historic sanctuary in both style and function.  Rockville church has a rich history and is excited that, through the grace and guidance of God, the best is yet to come!

Do you see yourself fitting into our family of faith?  If so, please see the pastor or call the church office for more information about membership in our church.
